Sometimes the best careers are the ones you never planned. Sarah left Missouri for Dublin journalism school to take a 'temporary' sales job at SAP to pay the bills. 15 years later, she's still here, because she realized that understanding customers is just investigative reporting by another name.

“I've been at SAP for eight years now, and looking back, it's been about constantly pushing myself into new challenges and finally finding where I fit. I started in 2017 as a technology consultant with SAP Concur, doing complex integration work. I'd worked at other tech companies before, building up my skills in IT and project management, but SAP felt different. The problems were bigger, more varied, and the products we built changed how businesses run.
After five years of consulting, I hit a ceiling. I was good at the technical work, but I wanted more. I wanted to work strategically, build real relationships with customers, and see my impact directly. That’s when I moved into Premium Engagement as a Lead Technical Quality Manager. I now partner with our strategic customers as their go-to for SAP services and support. When they’re navigating digital transformation, hit roadblocks, or need a clear path forward, I partner with them to translate their priorities into action by assembling the right experts, aligning roadmaps, and driving adoption—so our products reliably support their SAP projects and business processes.

“I'm not going to sugarcoat it, the path here wasn't smooth. As a Black woman working in a technical role, I've walked into rooms where I could feel the doubt. Can she really handle these topics? Does she know what she's talking about? Furthermore, I'm not a native German speaker, and when you're dealing with executives, fluent German matters. There were times I held back because I was worried about not sounding perfect enough. What kept me going was having managers at SAP who believed in me and created opportunities when things didn't work out elsewhere.
But the real turning point was co-founding Black Women in Tech DACH in 2023. We started it because we all felt the same gap. There were limited spaces where Black women in tech like me could really connect, support each other and not have to explain or justify our presence.
Since we launched, we've been highlighting members doing great work, hosting events to empower our members and partnering with groups like SAP's Business Women's Network on workshops around career growth. Honestly, building this community has done more for my confidence than anything else. It gave me, and so many others, a place where belonging isn't something we have to earn.”
“I've had three kids the entire time I've been at SAP. When I joined, they were young and needed a lot of attention. Now they're teenagers and almost young adults which still surprises people when I tell them. I started having kids very early and SAP made it possible for me to be both a mom and pursue my career seriously. The flexibility to work from home when they needed me, especially during tough times like COVID, was everything. I don't know how I would have managed otherwise. I call it work-life harmony instead of balance because the two are woven together for me, and that's okay.
Now that the kids are more independent, I have more freedom to travel for customer meetings. My son did a 2-week school internship at SAP, which feels full circle. Eight years in, I can say I'm genuinely happy here. I found a place where I can keep learning, take on new roles, and most importantly, show up as myself—a mom, a technical expert, and someone building spaces for others who are still figuring out where they belong.”
